On Tuesday, August 20th, the Imperial County Board of Supervisors held their regular meeting in the Board Chambers at the County Administration Center in El Centro. The following are highlights of the meeting: 

The Board of Supervisors approved an agreement with the San Diego State University Research Foundation for the Computer and Employment Empowerment Training Program, allocating up to $850,357 for Fiscal Years 2024-2026. This program, initiated by the Department of Social Services, aims to enhance digital literacy and employment readiness among Imperial County residents, contributing to job market success and economic stability. Paula Llanas, Director of Social Services, highlighted that the initiative is "about more than just finding a job; it's about creating a pathway to self-sufficiency, which is the ultimate goal we want to achieve for our residents." 

Within the consent calendar, the Board of Supervisors approved:

• $1,000 contribution to WomanHaven for the 7th Annual Garden of Hope Mariposa Gala, with $500 each contributed by Supervisors Michael W. Kelley (District 3) and John Hawk (District 5) from their respective Community Benefit Accounts. This support underscores the County's commitment to aiding organizations like WomanHaven, which provide crucial services to survivors of domestic violence, helping to promote safety, healing, and empowerment within the community. 

• $1,000 in support to the Calexico Wellness Center from Community Benefit Account 1886001, with contributions from Supervisors Jesus Eduardo Escobar (District 1) and Luis A. Plancarte (District 2). This funding includes $500 for general support of the center and an additional $500 to cover costs associated with the Breast Cancer Awareness Health Fair, demonstrating the County's commitment to promoting health and wellness in the community. 

• Board of Supervisors ratified support to the Bombay Beach Community Services District for the replacement and installation of an A/C unit, totaling $8,400. The funding was evenly distributed, with $1,680 contributed from each of the Community Benefit Accounts of Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. This collaborative effort underscores the County's commitment to improving essential services and enhancing the quality of life for residents in the community. 

• An agreement with the Imperial County Children and Families First Commission (First 5 Imperial) for the Raise a Reader project for Fiscal Year 2024-2025. The agreement allocates up to $183,775 from the County Library's budget to support this initiative, which aims to promote early literacy and foster a love of reading among young children in Imperial County.
